The Chicago River Cottages (often just “River Cottages”) — a small, experimental riverside housing project by Harry Weese & Associates (c. 1988–89) in River North. Why it matters (architectural significance) One of Chicago’s earliest post-industrial riverfront residential infill projects—built when this stretch was still mostly warehouses and rail. Weese used galvanized metal cladding, steep shed roofs, and triangular glazing to echo boatsheds/industrial lofts, giving the homes a nautical, machine-age character that engages the waterway. The complex helped kick-start the Chicago River revival, showing that people could live right on the river years before the modern Riverwalk boom.
